One scam that I experienced many times last year was a job scam. Many unknown emails and phone numbers would reach out to me about a job offer after supposedly reading my resume, even though most of the time I didn’t apply to these companies. I almost fell for one of these scams right after high school. I was at the bank asking for their opinion on a supposed “job” that I was going to do online, and they told me it was a scam.

Oh my goodness! That’s crazy that people try and do that.
It’s incredibly deceitful, especially because of how hard it is to get a job in the workforce.
That’s very upsetting to hear. It doesn’t seem very legal for companies to give your information to scammers. Is there anyway to stop your number from getting leaked to scammers?
That’s honestly a great question. Although it’s usually out of our control to stop scammers from getting our number, it is within our control to take the next steps forward. If this person is reaching out to you out of the blue, ask yourself a few questions. Do I know their company? Do I know this person? Did I apply to this place for a job? Most importantly, ask yourself if you’re paying THEM or if they are paying YOU. Scammers will get you that way, and you can easily fall into a pyramid scheme. Most important of all, don’t share anything important (credit card information, social security number, etc.). If it doesn’t look legit, it isn’t. If it looks too good to be true, it is.
That’s horrible, job scams are just the worst. I’m glad you reached out to the bank and they told you what that job opportunity really was. Thank you for sharing this story, Teagan.
Anytime, I want to make sure that everyone is aware of the potential dangers that come with fake job posts.
I’ve only seen fake jobs on big sites like Indeed and LinkedIn. I don’t think I’ve been contacted out of the blue for any job offer, let alone a fake one 😭
It’s getting incredibly scary in the job market and world of scams. Best to stay safe wherever you go.
